Spiegel Interview with Orhan Pamuk
"An Honor for Turkish Literature"
Turkish author Orhan Pamuk was awarded the Nobel prize for literature last week. SPIEGEL spoke with him about what it means for Turkey, about his enemies, and about the clash between East and West.

I would like to congratulate Pete Blackwell who did good reporting on Mr. Pamuk's Nobel case. Thanks to him, I have seen that unfortunate article in WSJ. Melik Kaylan, born in Istanbul, a 'writer' in New York, writes about Pamuk's 'Reality'. I totally agree with Pete's critique of that thick-headed writer. Pete's another excellent post is the one that demonstrates the lack of Pamuk news in some "The outspoken anti-jihad "where-are-all-the-moderates" blogs" that were supposed to have a field day lauding Pamuk and all that he represents..

L.A.'s skid row has become a magnet for fraud schemes that use the area's homeless population to rip off the federal government, authorities said this week as they launched a crackdown on the activities.

In just the last few months, state and federal investigators have broken up two food stamp scams, one of which involved a merchant who allegedly gave homeless people 50 cents on the dollar for their stamps, then charged the entire value — $6 million — to the government.

Turkey Produces more Boron than US
By Anadolu News Agency (aa), Ankara
Monday, December 18, 2006

Turkey’s boron production has surpassed that of the United States. Executive Director of Eti Mine Works General Management, Orhan Yilmaz said that Turkey succeeded in outshining the United States in the mining and sale of boron reserves.

Yilmaz said that they met the demands for boron by relying on Turkey’s existing capacity. Noting that there was a high demand for their products, Yilmaz stated that they considered new projects to increase the production capacity and diversify the line of production. Further underlining that the modernization process and the construction of new facilities would be completed in three years, Yilmaz noted that the production and sale capacity would increase as a consequence.

The executive director cited that substantial progress was made in 2005 and recalled that the entire capacity of refined boron production was 730,000 tons in 2002.

The total amount of boron export in 2002 was $186 million and $300 million in 2005. Yilmaz estimated that this figure would increase to $360 million in 2006.

He concluded by noting that their goal was to increase boron sales to $600 million by 2010.
